It's for Real

Well after a long, and mildly painful process, I am packed.

Yesterday ran the last errands, had lunch with the family and Chris, and packed, packed, packed. Then woke up at 5:00 am to go to Village Inn and have breakfast with Chris.

Today phase I begins: the family flight to NYC! We arrive tonight---and depending if we make it in time, may try to catch the US Open!

Tomorrow phase II: The flight to Dubai and then onto Nairobi!

Here is a picture of me with my backpack that is half my size, or more...and yes I am wearing heels, and yes, it is a joke. Today I've got my sneakers on...rearin' to go. Here are also a few pictures of our goodbye brunch etc...

Hamjambo! 4 Days to Go...

A short pre-departure update!

Still haven't begun packing the massive backpack---but when that thing is full you bet I will post a picture!

Beginning to take malaria medication on Wednesday...and dealing with the logistical, and emotional ins and outs of leaving.

So we all (as in Max, Raphae, Mom, Dad and Me) leave for New York, JFK Friday morning. Then, they will all take me to the airport at 8:00 a.m. Saturday morning, and drive on to Providence from there to take Max to school! My flight departs JFK at 11:20 a.m. September 1st, EST and arrives in Dubai, (United Arab Emirates) at 8:10 a.m. on September 2nd. We then fly from Dubai, to Nairobi Kenya, arriving at 7:05 p.m. September 2nd, Kenyan time, which is 10 hours ahead of Denver, 8 ahead of New York. Talk about jet lag....good thing I don't sleep anyways!

When I arrive in Nairobi we may be able to quickly email and say that we arrive alive---before being whisked off to an orientation camp site outside of the city where we've been told to "excpect to rough it." Here's to just diving in....

I will be in a rural part of the country without contact until September 10th, when I will move in with my Nairobi family. begin Society lecture classes, continue intensive language study---and start life in the city!

I will post my cell phone number in Kenya as soon as I can. My mailing address (letters only) is:

Can't wait to hear from you all.....
